THIRTY
THE DRIVER ENTERED city hall and pulled up tight against the curb. I glanced left, past Jami, and saw protestors in the dark, sitting on the grass. Not as many as I thought there might have been during normal waking hours. A few of them noticed us. They got to their feet and grabbed their signs and moved toward us. To our right, a group of NYPD cops got ready to push the crowd back. The driver hopped out the front. He walked around the vehicle and opened the door for us. Emma climbed out first. Jami and I followed.
He closed the door hard behind us. I thanked the driver. Shook his hand and turned to face city hall. Emma gestured for us to follow and she led Jami and me up the stairs to a door. I pulled it open for them. Emma and Jami stepped through and I glanced back at the chaos below. The driver nodded at me. Then he climbed back inside, but didnât leave. Just kept the engine running until he was needed again.
We moved down a long corridor and found the stairs. Emergency lights were on. Emma told us the elevator wouldnât work. A minute later, we stepped into a huge lobby with a sign posted outside a door that read Mayorâs Office. Emma swiped a keycard against a card reader. The reader lit up green and she pulled the door open and gestured for us to step inside. There was a reception desk at the front of another large room. The desk was unoccupied. Nobody to receive at this time of night. Beyond that, there were restrooms along both sides of the wall. Womenâs on the left, menâs on the right. I could hear someone washing their hands in the womenâs restroom. Along the far end of the room I saw another door with another sign outside it. A nameplate that read Bill DiBenedetto. Emma walked past us and pulled the door open and stepped in first. The mayor himself was inside, standing at the window, looking out at the city. It wouldâve been an amazing view had the city had any lights on to look at. Only distant headlights and taillights could be seen. Howard Novak, DiBenedettoâs police commissioner, was seated at a long table. He saw us first and looked up from his phone. The mayor noticed us next. He seemed surprised, like he was expecting someone else. He furrowed his brow. Took two steps forward and pointed a finger at me.
âWho the hell do you think you are?â he said, elongating the first three words for dramatic effect.
âGreat to see you again.â
âExplain yourself, Jordan.â
Novak glared. Jami crossed her arms. Emma Ross held two hands out and walked toward the mayor.
âBill, calm down,â she said. âA lot has happened that we need to bring you up to speed on.â
âYouâre damn right, and it all went south when this guy showed up.â
I said nothing. Just stared across at the man.
âFirst you lose Webb; then youâre seen near Tower 7, where multiple bombs were just set off.
